چکیده

To investigate the presence of the Laing-Garrington effect (i.e. the lobe containing the jet more depolarized than that containing the counter-jet), we analyse polarization data at 6 and 20 cm for a sample of double low-luminosity radio galaxies. The effect is well visible, although not very strong. We therefore confirm what was inferred in a previous paper based on data at one frequency (20 cm) only. Furthermore,we find that radio galaxies with strong radio cores show a more pronounced asymmetry in depolarization. We conclude that the presence of the Laing-Garrington effect in our sample is a indication that relativistic motions do occur on the kpc scale of low-luminosity radio galaxies as recently suggested by theoretical arguments and observational evidence.

A sample of radio galaxies spanning three decades in radio luminosity - I. The host-galaxy properties and black-hole masses

The results of analysis of HST I−band imaging of a sample of 41 radio galaxies spanning three orders of magnitude in radio luminosity at redshift z ≃ 0.5 are presented. These results represent the first stage in a coordinated programme to study the connection between radio luminosity and host-galaxy properties, black-hole masses and cluster environments in radio galaxies spanning a wide range i...

Evidence of different star formation histories for high- and low-luminosity radio galaxies

We present the results of our investigation into the stellar populations of 24 radio galaxies at z ≃ 0.5 drawn from four complete, low-frequency selected radio surveys. We use the strength of the 4000Å break as an indicator of recent star formation, and compare this with radio luminosity, optical spectral classification and morphological classification. We find evidence of different star format...

Faint radio samples: the key to understanding radio galaxies

The large number of differences between highand low-redshift radio galaxies have almost all been discovered by looking at the bright 3C sample of radio sources. This has the disadvantage that the strong correlation between radio luminosity and redshift within a single sample makes it impossible to be determine whether these differences are the result of cosmic evolution or whether they are simp...

A Polarization Study of Radio Galaxies and Quasars selected from the Molonglo Complete Sample

We present total-intensity and linear-polarization observations made with the Very Large Array at λ20 and 6 cm of a representative sample of 42 radio galaxies and quasars selected from the Molonglo Complete Sample. The sources have been chosen to be of large size to probe the depolarizing medium on these scales using our present data and later with observations at lower frequencies with the Gia...

The Environments of Low and High Luminosity Radio Galaxies at Moderate Redshifts

In the local Universe, high-power radio galaxies live in lower density environments than lowluminosity radio galaxies. If this trend continues to higher redshifts, powerful radio galaxies would serve as efficient probes of moderate redshift groups and poor clusters. Photometric studies of radio galaxies at 0.3 . z . 0.5 suggest that the radio luminosity-environment correlation disappears at mod...
